[Harlanellison.com] Unca Harlan's Art Deco Pavilion: Archives: Two days ago I received yet another solicitation (it's about a dozen so far, over the years) seeking film rights to "Jeffty is Five." When I told the director--whose name you'd know--that I didn't want to sell the rights, he seemed startled and asked why. He named an amount of money, I told him it wasn't the money, he named a larger amount, I got snippy with him and said, "Stop trying to buy me, it won't work," and he got snippier, suggesting I was demented because I was not slavering to get something on film AT ANY PRICE, and I responded that "Jeffty is Five" plays like a baby doll just wonderfully as a story, on the page, filmed in the reader's imagination and inner eye, but that I felt it to be one of those stories that would have to be altered so precariously, so drastically for visual interpretation, with very little hope that even I--immersed in the inner mechanisms of that tale as I am--could do a decent screenplay--that the risks of emergent crap rather than glory outweighed the chances that would have to be taken.
